Sweet marjoram is cultivated in Egypt as biennial plant for the leaves and essential oil that are used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The cultivation of sweet marjoram in newly reclaimed land under a sprinkler irrigation system yielded 94 percent of leaf yield observed in loamy soils and was superior in the oil content. Harvests in October gave the highest leaf and oil yields. The main plant constituents of marjoram in newly reclaimed lands were similar with the constituents of plants cultivated in loamy land.

The main chemical component of Marjoram essential oil is Terpinen-4-ol. Terpinen-4-ol has a monoterpene backbone and is part of the alcohols functional group. Terpinene-4-ol contains toning properties that contribute to the overall toning properties of Marjoram essential oil.
